REWATCH: Various Shorts & The Pricemaster [2001]

Today was a special night because John, my friend and coworker, finally came to a movie night! Because we did a vertical drama last time, we decided to do a collection of shorts and favorite commercials including "Instant Adoring Boyfriend," the Game Crazy training video, a "Rainbow Sponge" compilation, "You Could Stop At Five Or Six Stores," Mike's Golf, Eagleman, Phil Davidson, Cami Secret, the Uroclub, Tiddy Bear, Booty Pop, etc.

The highlight was a video John offered up called "The Pricemaster." To be clear, it wasn't bad but a delightful piece of performance art that immediately became a part of our obscure set of BMN phrases. The film starts with a quote from "The Medium is the Message" and a short cold open that clearly lays out that the medium is "garage sale." At this garage sale in Texas, there is a small stage for the Pricemaster: a figure clad in a red balaclava, gold mask, silver jacket, and red harem pants with Togo-esque structure. He speaks into a booming, reverb mic a few key phrases including "Make me an offer" and "I am the pricemaster." Whenever someone makes an offer, he raises it by hundreds, thousands, or millions of dollars. He also repeats those same phrases in Spanish. Sometimes he does weird, slow dance moves. No one buys anything. He is flanked by a sign that says "Thank you for shopping here. Your business is appreciated" but no business happens. It's beautiful.

No spoons but probably 4/5 stars.

REWATCH: Samurai Cop [1991]

Last Monday we rewatched the legendary Samurai Cop with Adam's nibling, Ash, and three-year-old Jade who actually did a good job of watching quietly. It's a film for kids and adults, I guess.

REWATCH: Popstar [2005]

After a few weeks off due to perpetual illness, we finally met up this week to rewatch the Aaron Carter (RIP) vehicle Popstar. It was actually even better than we remembered and we kind of want to up the score we gave to an 8.

REWATCH: I Believe In Santa [2022]

For our holiday movie, we decided to do a rewatch and we were pleasantly surprised that this movie was actually even better than we remembered it. We only gave it a 5 last time, but we all concluded that we should up the rating to a 7.

REWATCH: Fight Of Fury [2020]

Tonight we rewatched Fight of Fury because we had Sarah's uncles as guests. Read the original review here. By the way, still no signs of a sequel.

REWATCH: Creating Rem Lezar [1988]

On the anniversary of the start of Bad Movie Night, we decided to do a rewatch of Creating Rem Lezar. In spite of having seen it twice before, we could barely remember it outside of how fun and insane it is. We especially didn't remember that the Twin Towers have a significant moment in this film and the inappropriateness of that on this day of all days did make us giggle because we're terrible and traumatized. Sarah tried to insist that Adam should be Rem Lezar for Halloween. He said no, but we'll see.

REWATCH: The Room [2003]

As is often something of an initiation for the uninformed, we decided that it was necessary to do a rewatch of the classic The Room as we had a guest tonight. Well versed in the sci-fi channel's attempts at film making but woefully inexperienced when it comes to the paragons of the genre, Scott came to movie night with skepticism but an open mind. It did take a while to try to convince him we weren't watching a porno and even then we weren't entirely successful. Fair.

Every time we watch this film, it seems to take even longer because of how often we have to pause it. This time it was slightly less because of diverging conversation and more because of the arrival of Adam and Sarah's daughter, Jade, who really stole the show with an intermission performance of causing herself to throw up in a desperate effort to eat more bread and then slipping on her own vomit.

Either way, this time the sub conversation did keep coming back to the idea that a polycule really would have solved all the issues of the film. And it would still fully support what seems to be one of the attempted themes: if everyone in the world loved each other, the world would be a better place. Tommy/Johnny should probably have just taken his own advice here and gotten in on the Mark/Lisa action. Denny would probably be down too.

Also, it was apparently decided that Kay is Adam and Sarah's Denny (or like, an actually platonic Mark).

REWATCH: How To Get Revenge [1989] & Shorts

REWATCH: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun [1985]

We have a bad movie first here people: an accidental rewatch.

We rolled a d10 and got this one from our Book Barn stack not realizing that we actually watched it back in 2014. I only just now realized it because when I entered the title into the tag section, I realized we already have a tag for the movie.

Were the signs there? Only sort of. Sarah realized very quickly that she had seen it before but being that we were all born in the 80s, we assumed it was some kind of childhood memory thing like Kay's love of Teen Witch and Adam's affinity for Mother Goose's Rock n Rhyme. Later on when Shannon Doherty's character said the line, ""You think I'm punk?! That's not as cool as new wave but it's better than preteen!" I felt extremely strong deja vu. I basically wrote it off as having seen a clip of it somewhere.

So, oops? I'll just link to my original review because frankly I'm hilarious and don't want to try to write a new one.

Have a bunch of pictures of Helen's Hunt cranium accessories.

Spoon Rating: 2*
*It's a low spoon rating because we honestly laughed at a lot of the actual jokes. It wasn't a bad film. Maybe like 2.5/5 stars but obviously pretty forgettable.

REWATCH: Fateful Findings [2013]

Nothing can ever truly top this in terms of Neil Breen's work. It nearly fills the entire Neil Bringo card.

Just go see it.

After you can read my original review.

REWATCH: The Warrior And The Blind Swordsman [1983]

It may be weird to title this a rewatch since there was never an original post on it, but that's because it was first watched when I was on a trip. The goal was the watch something that wouldn't be too good so I wouldn't miss anything, but they failed. The Warrior And The Blind Swordsman turned out to be so good that it was rewatch worthy.

The plot kind of revolves around this friendship duo of the blind swordsman and the warrior. During the Dutch colonization of Indonesia, a general sets up a competition that the blind swordsman wins. He fakes the death of the warrior and all is going fine until some sort of evil goddess wants him for her mate and he rejects her. Things get pretty complicated from there with a guy who has a tail and kidnaps some girl child who is important to the swordsman, a bunch of the goddess's scantily clad female warriors, and the occasional involvement of the Dutch army. The plot is a little hard to follow but it doesn't really matter much. What makes this movie so special is the effects.

Every time you start to have the thought that the movie might be dragging, you will suddenly encounter a special effect so bizarre that you will be howling in laughter. The moment when the guy with the tail first has his tail enter the scene by popping out from under his coat is so startling and unnerving that you can't help but scream. The blind swordman decapitates a man with what amounts to a pipe and the head goes soaring. People occasionally fly but so slowly that running would be more efficient. And then there's the final battle where it seems like everyone is just suddenly combustible. If you throw someone into something, they will explode. It is insanity. The highs are so high that the lows are forgivable. Watch it.

REWATCH: The Room [2003]

In honor of the nine year anniversary of Bad Movie Night, we decided to rewatch The Room for the first time in about four years. It took us about three hours to watch just because we kept pausing it to have deviating conversations or to explore the artistry. Some highlights include: stopping to tell the story about how Kay's mom called her a homewrecker when she wasn't doing anything, an in depth analysis of each character's utility to the story, Erik and Kay randomly talking about D&D, Sarah making more quesadillas, a passionate defense of Mark's cluelessness when Lisa is hitting on him since we are actually all exactly that stupid ourselves, Adam pointing out which lines specifically have become a fundamental part of his lexicon and his waxing poetic about how much he enjoys the character of Claudette, and many more.

We ended the evening by watching a serious of bad porno openers on YouTube because, honestly, they aren't too dissimilar to The Room.

REWATCH: Birdemic [2008]

It's been five years since we last watched "Birdemic" so it was about time for a rewatch and that was definitely a good amount of time to wait. We got out our hangers again in preparation, and got ready to hang out with the family (and have ourselves a party). It was enough time that all the weird moments were fun again, and we had managed to forget some of the intricacies of the meandering plot. Tom joined us for this one, which was appropriate given that he is an audio person and an amateur ornithologist and we apparently wanted him to suffer. If you want to actually hear about the movie, here's the original post

REWATCH: Death Bed: The Bed That Eats [1977]

Today was a rewatch of the absolutely wonderful "Death Bed: The Bed That Eats." You can read my two previous reviews here and here. And, as is necessary every time we watch it, we have come up with even more sequel titles for another "Death Bed" movie.

  • Death Bed: The Grim Sleeper
  • Death Bed: Laid Out
  • Death Bed: No Pillow Talk
  • Death Bed: Not Full Yet
  • Death Bed: Sleep Like The Dead
  • Death Bed: Slumber Room
  • Death Bed 2: The Twin

REWATCH: The Roller Blade Seven [1991]

For this Monday's movie we decided to return to the Zen Road Warrior: The Roller Blade Seven. It seemed appropriate for a rewatch since Erik couldn't come because of college student things and Tom was actually able to come in person for the first time because of spring break (so, teacher things).

I've already written tons about this movie so if you want to read my previous posts the original is here and the last time we rewatched it is here.

Afterwards, we went down a little spiral of watching shorts which lead us to the YouTube channel where we found DoomBox, Scales Advertising. We watched all the little bits of advertising they had made with one of them (for lead wipes) actually funny enough to watch again.

REWATCH: "An Idea Whose Time Has Come" [1990], "The Rainbow Sponge", "Creating Rem Lezar" [1988]

Last Monday we had a triple feature of some of the best shorts we've seen. We started with "An Idea Whose Time Has Come," the most vague infomercial ever for some sort of mineral supplement called KM. It was no more clear this time around but we did manage to find the product on Amazon and Adam made the dubious decision to buy a bottle. Stayed tuned, I guess, for a review of it. After that we enjoyed the full version of "The Rainbow Sponge" where a women named Dee gets nearly orgasmic over a dense sponge that you can decorate with, and then we enjoyed the glorious musical masterpiece "Creating Rem Lezar". We're still pretty sure it's some sort of creepy religious thing, but as long as the kids are happy. Enjoy this subtle juxtaposition again:

All three of these are worth your time and might be best watched in the order we did so you can slowly descend into madness.

REWATCH: Twisted Pair [2018]

Last Monday, we decided we needed to indoctrinate Tom into the Church of Breesus. While Fateful Findings is probably his best work, it had been a while since we saw Twisted Pair, so we decided to give the CGI masterpiece another watch. Considering this was only the second time we've watched it, we were a little disappointed to see that the disk is already not playing towards the end of the film. And a reminder: the disk was clearly put together in Breen's house. So basically, Neil Breen owes Adam $35. We also got nearly every square on Neil Breen Bingo.

Bingo and my original review can be found here.
